Christopher Chandos-Pole??

4 more CDVs have just turned up, which look like the same boy as the first 2. But two have a date on, 1866, which could not be Christopher. The top hat probably indicates the boy was at Eton Public school. The author is puzzled, and hopes a reader will be able to solve the problem.

Maclagan graduated in mathematics four years later and was ordained as a Deacon the same year. He rose through the English church hierarchy, becoming Rector at Newington (1869), Vicar at Kensington (1875) and Bishop of Lichfield (1878). He served as Archbishop of York from 1891, resigning in 1908.

              Author's Notes

Collection of 10 CDVs and 2 larger card photos in good condition.
The CDVs are abt 6x11 cms, the larger cards abt 10x16 cm.

All these cards show people in or connected with the Pole-Gell
family of Hopton Hall near Wirksworth. I have scanned several
for reference. First shown are Henry Charles Poll Gell and
Mrs Theresa Chandler Poll Gell. There is a duplicate of Mrs
in colour and at least one other view of Henry.

This family can be found in 1881 census under name Gill (typo)
living at Hopton Hall, Derbyshire, he shown as a Magistrate landowner.

Next are shown Edith Frances Chandler Poll Gell, dau. of the above
dated Sep. 1876 and H. Charles again dated March 8th 1870 dressed
as a priest. There is another of H. Charles in his outdoor wear.

Next comes a really nice photo of Margaret Alice Meade-Waldo sitting
on her father's lap in Sept. 1884 aged 2. Edmund Meade Waldo was
also a magistrate in 1881, living at Stonewall Mansion in Chiddingstone,
Kent with his fairly new wife Ciceley Eleanor. They married in 1879
and she was the daughter of Henry Charles Pole Gell. On far right
below is Major Edmund Bullen of the Rifle Brigade. The Bullen family
were distantly related to the Meade-Waldo family and have something to
do with Hever Castle that I haven't as yet researched. In the middle
below is Robert Blathwayt dated 1875. Robert shows in 1881 as a farmer
at Barton House, Barton Blount, Derby. His wife, Margaret Ermintrude
was also the daughter of Henry Charles Pole Gell.

Finally shown is as much I can scan of one of the larger cards, which
shows Christopher Charles Pole dated 1884.

The other larger card included but not shown is of Sir John Drummond Hay,
sometime consul of many countries it seems to Morocco and quite an
interesting chap. It is included as the writing on back is in same hand
as on other cards and it says "Given to me at Purves Hall in Greenlaw,
Sept. 16th 1890".

This is a super collection all connected - I acquired many more CDVs at
the same time which may be connected but are not titled. Perhaps if
there is a historian for one of these families they would know.

-----------------

A remarkably close British-Moroccan relationship developed under
two successive British Consuls-General, Edward Drummond-Hay (1829-45)
and his son Sir John Drummond-Hay (1845-86), both fluent Arabic speakers.
They mediated on Morocco's behalf during the 1840s with other European
countries such as Spain, France, Denmark and Sweden. In 1849 and 1858,
they arranged for ships of the Royal Navy to transport the Sultan's
sons to Mecca for the Hajj. In 1861, they helped to negotiate the
Spanish evacuation of Tetouan. Military co-operation also flourished.
Moroccan officers were sent for military training to Gibraltar and
Britain in 1875-76, and a British soldier, known as KaidMaclean, was
engaged by the Sultan in 1877 to help to train Morocco's army.

On his retirement in 1886, Sir John Drummond-Hay wrote that he had would
never forget the kindness of Moroccans, and went on to list a number of
the Sultan's officials whom he counted as personal friends. Sultan
MoulayHassan replied that he regarded Hay as a sincere friend and said
that his departure caused great sorrow.
