Order Microfilm for 1901 Census

Want to order 1901 Census microfilm from the PRO (Public Records Office)?
Here's what I did to get microfilm of the Wirksworth Area to use for
the Census transcriptions in this website.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  1. Browse PRO website for microfilm ref numbers. Browse catalogue.pro.gov.uk which is the Public Record Office Online Catalogue. (PROCAT) Enter "RG13" and click "GO" (to the 1901 Census returns) Click on "Browse the catalogue from here" Scroll down to "Derbyshire". Click on "+" for Derbyshire. Click on "+" for the RD (Registration District) that you want. Read off the reference number (eg "RG13/3234" for Wirksworth.) Click on eg RG13/3234 to see list of placenames in this RD Continue and collect and record all the RD reference numbers you need. [I needed RG13/3234,3235,3240,3265,3266 and 3267, see below for details] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  6. Order received. Order received 21 Mar 2003, after 9 days Two large rolls of microfilm, delivered by my friendly postman! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  7. Microfilm processing The microfilm was cut into strips of 3 frames each and two strips inserted into one microfiche jacket. Details were written onto each jacket title strip and the jacket inserted into a microfiche envelope. About 170 jackets+envelopes fit beautifully into one card index box, sold by W H Smith. Jackets are 152 mms x 103 mms and cost about 13p each and envelopes 2p. The combination of microfilm, jackets, envelopes and box make a film library that will last a lifetime and will not become technologically obsolete in ten years like PCs, CDs and software. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  8. Microfilm viewing One jacket can be loaded into a standard microfiche reader like a conventional microfiche. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
