===========================================================
WELCOME MESSAGE for the DERBYSGEN mailing list
               Revised September 6th, 2000.
===========================================================

My name is Jayne McHugh and I'm the owner of this list. When I'm on
holiday, or "off list" for any reason, Vic Brocklehurst takes care of
it for me. If you have a problem or query, send your message to:

    (derbysgen-admin@rootsweb.com)

and Rootsweb will route it to whichever of us is appropriate. We are
responsible for keeping it running as smoothly as possible and setting
some guidelines. ROOTSWEB is the host for this mailing list.

This is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in Genealogy or
History related to the county of DERBYSHIRE, England.

Read this message. Yes, I realize it is long but there is a lot of
important information here. In order to make things work you must
follow instructions - to the letter. If you leave something out of a
command or put something extra in, it won't work. This is because of
the way computer programs work.
A. Quick Instructions
B. New Subscribers
C. Guidelines
D. Tips
E. Further Information

A. QUICK INSTRUCTIONS:

1) To POST a message to this list use the address:
      DERBYSGEN-L@rootsweb.com

2) To SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE
to/from the LIST version (i.e. individual messages)
    send a message to:
      DERBYSGEN-L-request@rootsweb.com

to/from the DIGEST version (i.e. many messages in one e-mail)
      send a message to:

      DERBYSGEN-D-request@rootsweb.com

In the BODY of the message (not the subject line) type the word
SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE.

Do NOT use a signature file attached to the e-mail message. The
software reads your message and tries to answer each command it finds.
When it runs across your signature file it gets a bit confused and will
send you a message stating something like 'Do not recognize command
'Jones'. Do not recognize command "Smith", etc.

It is important when UNSUBSCRIBING that you use the right address or you
will not be removed from the list.

3) There is no "NO MAIL" option: if you need to leave the list for a
period of time you need to unsubscribe and then resubscribe when you
are ready to start receiving messages again.

B. NEW SUBSCRIBERS:

When you subscribe to the list it would be very much appreciated if you
would post a message introducing yourself and letting the rest of us
know where your interests lie and which families you are researching.

I realize that if this is the first time you have subscribed to a
mailing list it is all quite confusing for you but you can't go wrong
if you send a message to DERBYSGEN-L@rootsweb.com

and just list your surnames with accompanying dates and places.

C. GUIDELINES:

*This list is for the discussion of Genealogy and History, primarily
regarding DERBYSHIRE and related families. Discussion of migration
patterns, immigration, heraldry, historical sketches, DERBYSHIRE
settlements, census data, wills, family Bibles, vital records, web
sites, etc. as relates to DERBYSHIRE is encouraged.

* DO NOT post virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political
announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, etc.
For information on virus hoaxes and urban legends see

http://www.cyndislist.com/internet.htm

* Please DO NOT send file attachments (messages with files appended) to
the list. If you have a file you would like to share with the members,
announce what you have to offer, then send the file only to those who
request it, via private email.

* NO rude comments or flaming in the list! No discussion of flaming in
the list. For definitions of flaming and related information see

http://www.matisse.net/files/glossary.html#F

* DO NOT impose any other rules or conditions, expressed or implied
elsewhere, upon this list. Rules of other forums may not necessarily
apply here. Do not try to regulate this list. If you do not like the
way someone formats their queries or responses, or the content of their
subject titles, take it up with the listowner, NOT in the list. The
list is for Genealogy and History.

* Try to keep quoting to a minimum. "Quoting" is repeating text of the
message you are replying to. Some quoting is necessary to remind other
readers what the thread is about but do try to use good judgement.
Quoting the previous writer's signature block or surname list is
totally unnecessary.

* Surname lists are okay but please try to limit them to say, half a
dozen names. Any more than that and many people just won't read them.
Try keeping several small lists and rotate them with each succeeding
message.

D. TIPS:

* PLEASE capitalize ALL surnames (not the whole message) as this makes
it much easier for others to see your surnames when reading your
message.

* SUBJECT LINES - When replying to a message please check the subject
line to make sure that it is relevant to the topic in hand. It gets
very frustrating when subject lines get repeated over and over from the
original message and it has nothing to do with the present topic.

* ACKNOWLEDGE replies to your queries. This is a regular occurrence
where someone will reply to your message but receive no acknowledgement
that you have received it and not even a simple thank you for any
information they have furnished you with.

* When REPLYING to a message sent to the list decide if this is
information that all the list members would like to know about or
whether it would only be of interest to the individual you are replying
too. If you feel that all list members would find it of interest then
by all means post your reply to the list but if it includes such
details that would only be of interest to this one person then please
just reply to that person. Thank you.

* POST your query frequently, perhaps once a month, if you have not yet
found your ancestor. New people are joining the list all the time and
they may have the info you need.
