Hopton Hall contents auction 1989

In 1989 the contents of Hopton Hall were auctioned by Sotheby's. This is a transcription of the catalogue of that Auction. An outline of the history of Hopton Hall and the Gell family, from earliest times to the circumstances leading to the sale of Hopton Hall and the auction of the contents, is given in the catalogue. It is hoped that the description of items for auction will give the reader a glimpse into the history and way of life of perhaps the oldest and wealthiest family who have lived in the Wirksworth Area studied by this website.

Icms. (48112 by 39ins.) £1,200-1,800 ***Richard Woodland became Bishop of Cloyne, South ern Ireland, in 1781, and was buried at Cloyne Cathedral where there is a memorial to him. He helped to found the House of Industries in Dublin, and sat as a member of the House of Peers. The Bishop is notable for having persuaded the Irish Parliament to pass its first Poor Law; the paper he holds is believed to refer to this and this portrait was painted to commemorate this incident in his public life. He also drew up several Acts under which the House of Industries was founded, and for this he received thanks from both the Irish and English Houses of Parliament. He married Susanna, daughter of Richard Blake. They had five sons and two daughters. He was also Chancellor of St. Patrick's and Rector of St. Wer burgh's, Dublin.

(44 by 55112ins.) £20,000-30,000 Exhibited: Royal Academy 1811, no. 645 ***Eleanor Anne Porden was the daughter of William Porden (see lot 365), the architect responsible for the building of Eaton Hall, the Duke of Westminster's seat in Cheshire. Eleanor wrote a novel in two volumes entitled The Veils... This novel was highly acclaimed and she received the distinction of being created a member of the Institut Francais. It was at one of her Sunday meetings in her father's London home that Eleanor first met Captain John Franklin. He continued to attend these discussion groups, they later became engaged, and he married Eleanor. They had one child, a daughter, also Eleanor, who was mother to Philip Lyttelton Gell of Hopton. Captain Franklin was preparing to set out on a voyage to Hudson Bay Territory when he discovered that his wife was suffering from a fatal disease. Despite his attempts to cancel his voyage, she insisted that he continued. She died three days after the Captain's departure. As no letter concerning his wife could reach him for a year, he continued to write her letters and poems. Also included in this lot are two volumes of Eleanor Porden's 'Coeur de Lion' (1822), inscribed by her to William Porden. They are to be seen in the background of the painting.
