"PEDIGREES"

by Thomas Norris INCE 1799-1860

Here is a transcription of the 484 pages of this Manuscript Book, made from a microfilm copy supplied by Derby Local Studies Library. In most cases abbreviations have been expanded without comment to avoid confusion. A new page numbering system is used based on the microfilm frame order. Ince's original page numbers and the DLSL photocopy reference are given in red brackets. The original pages are held at DLSL, are separated, and unfortunately do not possess a coherent numbering system.
These pages were transcribed by John Palmer, Kathryn Farrell and Sonia Addis-Smith between Oct 1999 and Feb 2000. Proof-read by Sonia and John, edited and compiled by John. Contact about uncertain words, and I will recheck microfilm of the original.

Back to MENU Transcribed by John Palmer, Dorset, England [From a newspaper cutting, no indication of source or date] General Sir James OUTRAM The circumstances of this soldier of fortune, or fortunate soldier, being just called to a new and most difficult and delicate sphere of action in command at Dinapore, may invest with some interest the following extract from a letter written by one who knows him well, as he did also the other gentleman alluded to: "How much the late William BOYD, the political commissioner for Guzerat, would have enjoyed the honours that await his friend 'Jemmy OUTRAM', le Chevalier Bayard of the East, as he is called - the knight 'sans peur at sans reproche'. BOYD had formed a correct estimate of OUTRAM as a lad. He used to rate the young soldier, in his own happy, humorous style, amongst his friends at Poonah and Nassauak.'I can't persuade that fellow, OUTRAM, of the great talents he possesses. If we live to see it, we shall find him a great diplomatist, as well as a great general'.Often did BOYD, when assistant to Sir Henry POTTINGER, in the social circle at the residency, give out his auguries regarding OUTRAM, in which the future Chinese plenipo heartily concurred. A good anecdote was told by BOYD of a rather extraordinary meeting, or almost recontre, he had on one occasion with OUTRAM, when the former was one of the secretaries to the government at Bombay. The circumstance is well known of OUTRAM, who had most chivalrously volunteered to the general for the hazardous service, arriving at Bombay with dispatches from the army after a victory - having, dressed as a native, passed through hostile tribes - in fact, accomplished a journey of many weeks, under circumstances of such peril and adventure, which if ever equalled, certainly was never surpassed. He reached Bombay at midnight, and made his way to the abode of BOYD, the secretary in the Persian department. He effected an entrance to his friend's house, but not wishing to disturb the household, quietly betook himself to the secretary's studio, rolled himself up in a tiger's skin, and was soon, poor fellow, as may be easily conceived, in a state of oblivion after the passages, by 'flood and field' of the previous six weeks. The secretary had work to do at an early hour, and accordingly repaired to the sanctum, when, lo and behold a huge mass presented itself to the astounded secretary. Few men had shot more tigers than BOYD, and as the heap on the floor presented, both ocularly and orally, evident proofs of vitality, the dirk, the rifle, the pistol, all flashed across his mind, as he viewed something of which he quoad the genus tiger there could be no doubt. Fortunately for the future hero of Khooshah BOYD merely applied his foot, when out rolled the unwashed and unshorn 'Jemmy OUTRAM.'"
