"PEDIGREES"

by Thomas Norris INCE 1799-1860

Here is a transcription of the 484 pages of this Manuscript Book, made from a microfilm copy supplied by Derby Local Studies Library. In most cases abbreviations have been expanded without comment to avoid confusion. A new page numbering system is used based on the microfilm frame order. Ince's original page numbers and the DLSL photocopy reference are given in red brackets. The original pages are held at DLSL, are separated, and unfortunately do not possess a coherent numbering system.
These pages were transcribed by John Palmer, Kathryn Farrell and Sonia Addis-Smith between Oct 1999 and Feb 2000. Proof-read by Sonia and John, edited and compiled by John. Contact about uncertain words, and I will recheck microfilm of the original.

Back to MENU Transcribed by Kathryn Farrell, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Wills of COATES by J. Hunter of London FAS There were many COATES in these parts of Derbyshire about South Wingfield and Wirksworth beside those whom I have mentioned, and some of them like Roger of Chesterfield were connected with the Mineral proceedings of the district. An Anthony COATES was defendant in a suit respecting Lead Mines in the Wapentake of Wirksworth with Sir Robert HEATH, Sir Cornelius VERMUYDEN and John MOLANUS Esq., the Earl of Dover and others (sic) Plaintiffs, in which there was a decree made Feby.16.1637, of which there was a copy in Hales' M.S.S. in the Library of Lincoln's Inn. An Anthony COATES of Brassington, husbandman, made his will Sept.21.1670, in which he names his son Anthony and grandchildren Anthony and Elizabeth WALTON; and also a brother Richard COATES of Cromford, and a daughter Ann whom he makes Executrix. A William COATES of Cromford and his son Anthony and other children William and Mary are named in the will of Henry COATES of Cromford in the parish of Wirksworth, yeoman dated March 6.1664, in which he desires to be buried in the Church of Wirksworth, gives his son John COATES a messuage at Nether Holloway in the parish of Ashover with 'remainder to testators grandchild Henry son of John, Emma COATES now my loving wife to have her third according to the custom and to be maintained by' his executors. Tenant-right at Cromford to his son John with remainder to his 2nd son John [insertions mark] Anna wife of the said John. Household goods to be equally divided amoung the younger children of John his son. Grandchild Rebecca COATES £40, grandchild John COATES 40 pounds, grandchild Ann COATES £40, to grandchild Henry COATES the best bible he shall leave, and to be brought up in learning and the fear of God by his father, till he is old enough to be put to some trade. Kinswoman Dorothy COATES £10 when of age or married and to be kindly used as he used her. Money left in his hands for her by her father; her brother Anthony COATES. The testator had something in hand for the children of William COATES late of Cromford named above--£10 for the minister at Wirksworth for a funeral sermon. Friend Mr. John SCRIMSHAW of Godgrave Co. Notts and his son William SCRIMSHAW. Makes his son John Executor and his cousin John ABELL of Bonsal and his friend Mr. Henry WIGLEY of Seniorfield, Supervisors. Proved April 11.1665. It is clear that this is the will of some person of the better condition, but when so many relations are named in it and not any of those who are our connections, it would seem that the Testator was not connected with them, though living as it were among them. Again we have the will of William [COATES continued on page 066c]

Back to MENU Transcribed by Kathryn Farrell, Massachusetts, U.S.A. [continued from page 066b] [William] COATES of Cromford, miner, dated March 8.1700, who names his father Anthony, sisters Dinah and Ruth, also his son in law John AMET and wife Mary whom he makes Executrix. We have also the Inventory of John COATES of Cromford dated March 22.1683, whose wife Ann was his administratrix. And later still of these Cromford COATES, the Will of Isaac COATES of Cromford, butcher dated Nov.24.1717, who names his son Isaac, daughters Mary, Rebecca and Ann and wife Hannah, which Hannah removed to Wirksworth and died there in 1724, in which year we have inventory and notice of administration being granted to James WINGFIELD for the use of Mary, Rebecca, Isaac & Ann. Besides these there was a family who in their wills describe themselves of Youlgrave to which parish Middleton belongs. John COATES of Youlgrave yeoman made his will Jan.7.1702, names his wife Helen, sons Samuel & Thomas, daughters Ann BARKER and Mary wife of Francis BEARD, son William, grandchild John "if he live and come into the country to demand it", grandchild Thomas COATES and grandchild William BARKER, Mary, Jane and Elizabeth daughters of Elizabeth COATES widow of Youlgrave deceased occur in 1720. Samuel COATES of Youlgrave yeoman, the elder, made his will September 18.1731, named his wife Sarah, brother Thomas and his son Samuel, Thomas COATES of Youlgrave, butcher and his brothers John and William COATES, nephew Samuel BARKER, son in law Jonathan CLARKE and George CLARKE. Proved May 11.1732. Thomas COATES of Youlgrave made his will Sept.6.1736, daughter Ruth HAYWOOD and Mary and late brother Samuel COATES. Proved April 28.1737. William COATES of Youlgrave, Will, Apr 7.1740. Wife Mary, sons Thomas Richard Moses and Aaron and [crossed out between brackets] (lastly in this uninteresting family), Sarah COATES of Youlgrave, made her will Oct 15.1747, administration granted to her son Jonathan CLARKE, names also Eliza [za crossed out, replaced with as] ROBINSON. It should have been stated before, that in 1701 administration of the goods of Helen COATES of the parish of Youlgrave spinster was granted to her brother William COATES, her father John COATES then living. The above would be easily combined in a Table." Extracted from my Book & Family History July 1.1844

COATES of Youlgreave Co Derby, drawn up & compiled by T N Ince of Wirksworth 14th Nov 1828 whilst on a visit there, from documents in Mr. C[OATE'S] possession and from the relation of Mr & Mrs COATES. From a paper of extracts from the parish register the family seem to have been settled here on or before the reign of Elizabeth, for in 1571 Clemence COATES & Humphry HALLOWES both of Youlgreave were mard. And from the year 1603 to the present time different members of the family have served the Office of Churchwarden. John COATES 1603 John COATES 1638 In the year 1653 Rev Samuel COATES was vicar of Youlgreave, but whether of this family or not is not known. The COATES of Brightgate in par[ish] of Bonsall are descended from this family, but so long since that they do not reckon the degree. 27 May 1729 Indenture of Feoffment from George RIDGARD of Y[oulgreave] miner to Thomas COATES of Y butcher of all that Mess[uag]e Cottage or dw[elling] Ho[use] on Cawdel end in Y[oulgreave] cum [with] perts [appurtenances] in fee in consideration of 37/6 In 1734 Thomas COATES senr & junr, John COATES & Will COATES voted in right of the freeholds at Youlgreave
