"PEDIGREES" |
by Thomas Norris INCE 1799-1860 |
Here is a transcription of the 484 pages of this Manuscript Book,
made from a microfilm copy supplied by Derby Local Studies Library.
In most cases abbreviations have been expanded without
comment to avoid confusion.
A new page numbering system is used based on the microfilm frame order.
Ince's original page numbers and the DLSL photocopy reference are given
in red brackets.
The original pages are held at DLSL, are separated,
and unfortunately do not possess a coherent numbering system.
These pages were transcribed by John Palmer, Kathryn Farrell
and Sonia Addis-Smith
between Oct 1999 and Feb 2000.
Proof-read by Sonia and John,
edited and compiled by John.

Mr ROEBUCK's Family Connexion with Sheffield.
We have been favoured by a friend, skilled in genealogical enquiries,
with the following interesting statement in regard to Mr ROEBUCK's family:
"John ROEBUCK, of Sheffield, had five sons, all remarkable men, raising
the character of the commercial operations of Sheffield, but though in
their time they were by far the principal merchants here, Sheffield was
but the scene of some of ..... of their operations. They were the founders
of ....Carron Iron Works, in Scotland, and for a time the family were eminently
prosperous. The eldest was Joseph, who lived much abroad, but died at
Sheffield, unmarried. 2nd D.....im ROEBUCK, a name of great eminence in science,
of whom there is a large biographical account by Lord SO-... the Transactions
of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.... was the mind which governed very much
the .... of the family, in everything beyond the limits of Sheffield. Mr
John Arthur ROEBUCK, the present candidate, is his grandson. 3rd Benjamin.
He had the chief management of the mercantile affairs of the family at
Sheffield. He built Meersbrook House, and resided there; but in the latter
part of his life lived at Bath Ford, where he died, in 1796. He had two sons,
John and Benjamin, who both died unmarried at Sheffield, and a daughter who
was the first wife of Col. FENTON. 4th Thomas, of Sheffield, merchant. And
5th Ebenezer who was killed in the Carron Works.

Mr John SPENCER,
In consequence of your supposing yourself to be a 2nd cousin
of the late Misses Elizabeth & Sarah SPENCER of Bolehill Wirksworth, and in
consequence of your application to me on the subject I have searched
Wirksworth - Matlock - Crich and Ashover parish Registers, but have not been
able to find that your Grandfather Tim SPENCER had a brother Robert - for
Robert was Grandfather to the above ladies as I am informed by their
Executors, who also told me that he died a young man more than a Century ago
& that he had no brothers --- as they had made many enquiries of the Old
ladies whilst alive concerning their family &c (The Executors are well
acquainted with the family history and connexions). The name of SPENCER occurs
many times in Crich Register & I found a Robert baptized son of Robert SPENCER
in 1673, but no Timothy - the burial of your Grandfather Tim & baptism &c of
his children & your fathers burial I copied - At Matlock I found but few of
the name between 1660 & 1700 which was as far as I had occasion to search
but neither Timothy or Robert could I find. In 1773 a few years before
& after I also diligently searched at Crich for your sisters & your own
baptism but without success. In consequence of what Timothy SPENCER told me
I searched Ashover register from 1621 to 1724 in which period I found a great
many different families or branches of SPENCER baptized burried &c. In 1686
I found the names of of Robert & Timothy but unfortunately for you they
were sons of different parents - the former being son of John & Felisha
SPENCER and the latter being son of James & Sarah SPENCER & though I
searched both before & after very carefully I could not find a Timothy born
to John & Felisha SPENCER or to a John SPENCER, nor a Robert born to a James &
Sarah SPENCER or to a James SPENCER. From the circumstances of your Grandfather
coming from Milltown & from his being between 80 & 90 years old at his death
in 1771. The Timothy son of James & Sarah SPENCER baptized at Ashover 1686/7
must have been your Grandfather & James & Thomas & Sarah & Hannah found in
same Register must be his brothers & sisters & other children there most
likely were whose names being neither Timothy nor Robert I doubtless passed
over.
I do not think on the whole that you have any chance, & though you may
be a relation - yet not so near as 2nd cousin - The Executors both told me they
did not wish to throw unnecessary difficulties in the way and very handsomely
gave me information as to the name & early death of the late Miss SPENCERs
Grandfather Robert - and if your father John SPENCER & their father Robert
SPENCER had been own cousins (as you supposed they were) they could not have
been ignorant of it, and if it had been so would most certainly have
(most certainly have mentioned your family as relations when talking to their
Executors of their family and connexions). I most heartily wish for your sake
we had been successful in establishing your claim - The search however has not
been quite useless, as it clearly points out your origin and has enabled me
to draw the pedigree of your family contained on the other side of this sheet
- which may be useful either to you or some of yours at some future period -
if not now. I suppose the last 3 or 4 generations of the elder branch of your
family are registered at Matlock - where you & your sisters might also have
been baptized & your Sister buried - you were certainly not either of you
registered at Crich.
I remain your obedient servant
Thomas Norris Ince
Wirksworth 6th March 1830
(x) and Mr FROST one of the Executors has heard them remark how singular
it was that their Grandfathers father & Brother were all only sons

Pedigree of [^ TOPLIS] of Brassington Co Derby
drawn up by Thomas Norris INCE from an Abstract of Title, Brassington register,
church yard notes, information derived from old Mrs TOPLIS aged upwards of 80,
Mrs ATHERTON, James TOPLIS of Brassington, and others.
In 1620 or a little later Thomas TOPLIS paid a composition after the rate of
9/- [9 shillings] a year to the Crown for the confirmation of his
Copyhold estate there. This Thomas was undoubtedly the ancestor of the
William at the head of the underwritten pedigree. Thirty five years rent as
composition.
