"PEDIGREES"

by Thomas Norris INCE 1799-1860

Here is a transcription of the 484 pages of this Manuscript Book, made from a microfilm copy supplied by Derby Local Studies Library. In most cases abbreviations have been expanded without comment to avoid confusion. A new page numbering system is used based on the microfilm frame order. Ince's original page numbers and the DLSL photocopy reference are given in red brackets. The original pages are held at DLSL, are separated, and unfortunately do not possess a coherent numbering system.
These pages were transcribed by John Palmer, Kathryn Farrell and Sonia Addis-Smith between Oct 1999 and Feb 2000. Proof-read by Sonia and John, edited and compiled by John. Contact about uncertain words, and I will recheck microfilm of the original.

Back to MENU Transcribed by John Palmer, Dorset, England [Newspaper cutting, no source or date given] The Will of Joseph Thomas CANTRELL Esq of "King's Newton", Derby, was proved in London on the 19th ult by the executors and trustees, the Rev W H CANTRELL MA, the testator's brother, and Robert W M NESFIELD, Esq. The personality sworn under £35,000. The testator's family is of ancient origin and distinction, tracing descent for upwards of 500 years, and is associated with that of Viscount HARDINGE. Mr CANTRELL married Cecilia, daughter of the Rev H F MILLS, Chancellor of York, and grand-daughter of Dr MARKHAM, Archbishop of York. The testator survived his wife, leaving a daughter, Cecilia Elizabeth, heiress to his property. Mr CANTRELL had held, since 1847, the office of Judge of County Courts for Derbyshire, having previously been Judge of the Wirksworth and also of the Staffordshire Potteries Court of Requests. The testator attained to the age of sixty, and died April last, having executed his Will in 1860. His estates, real and personal, he bequeathed to his daughter, to be held in trust by his executors, who are also the trustees under the testator's marriage settlement, which deed he confirms, subject to limitations, in favour of the brothers and sisters of the testator's late wife. There are tokens of remembrance left to friends and pecuniary legacies to godchildren; and to his executors, the Rev W H CANTRELL,£500, and Mr NESFIELD,£200. All his printed and MS. law books, except such as his daughter may select, he leaves to the treasurer for the time being of the County Court of Derbyshire, holden at Derby, for the use of the judge and officers of that court.

Back to MENU Transcribed by John Palmer, Dorset, England [In the form of a private letter] (12 March 1833) Dear Sir, On looking over my Sheffield sketch of GOULD I find that my relator Michael GOULDs grandfather Thomas GOULD could not be Thomas GOULD the youngest of William GOULD & Mary HOLLIS, but might have been son of that Thomas GOULD, for my relators grandfather Thomas died about 1755 leaving Richard his son aged 3 or 4 years old which Richard dying in 1826 aet 75 would be born about 1751 so that he could not be the son (but might be the grandson) of Thomas GOULD of Crowdecote who married Ann BAGNALL in 1716. I think on comparing these facts together you will think as I do & consequently make another generation to the Crowdicote branch & this will also make good my relators saying that his father had an Uncle Isaac who lived near Longnor. The pedigree thus amended will stand thus:

I shall have then been able to send my friend at Sheffield a sketch of his pedigree. & send me your thoughts about the above sketch. [continued on Page 096d]

Back to MENU Transcribed by John Palmer, Dorset, England I saw GLOVER on Friday & he tells me he is getting on well & thinks he shall soon be out. He has rec[eive]d a pedigree of ADDERLY owner of lands in Thorpe but what is very odd there is no mention of the ADDERLEY who married the coh[eire]ssrs of MILWARD so that I presume these folks inherit it from a colateral branch not mentioned or else the ADDERLEY of Green Mews who married MILWARD died s.p.[without issue] & so the est[at]e devolved on the HAMSHALL branch. I find I have not much to add more.
