Samuel CLAY

Samuel CLAY son of James Barton CLAY and Martha NALL - born 23 April 1830. Samuel CLAY married Emma MATTHEWS in Aston, Birmingham on 6/5/1860. His occupation was given as a labourer, although this is expanded to "labourer at carriage works" on the birth certificate of his son Samuel Francis CLAY. They had three sons and four daughters between 1861 and 1876, but only one of the sons produced a male heir, and he was killed in the First World War, so the CLAY name in this branch of the family is now extinct. Samuel CLAY died in Derby in 1898.
