CWGC - GREATOREX, Ernest. Private 2nd/8th Bn The Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) age 19. date of death 26/09/1917. service number 202651. Son of John and Sarah Ann GREATOREX of 34 North End Wirksworth Derbyshire, Commonwealth War Dead, Grave ref V F 5 Dozinghem Military Cemetery.
Soldiers Died -
2/8th Bn GREATOREX, Ernest Born Wirksworth Derbyshire, enlisted - Wirksworth Derbyshire, 202651, Private, d o w, F& F 26/9/17.
Dozinghem comes under Westvleteren and the cemetery along with Mendinghem and Bandagehem were named by the British. Many Belgium villages end in Hem - hence - Dosing, Mending and Bandage 'hem'. They were CCS set up for the Third battle of Ypres in 1917. Each specialising in different types of wounds. All had a large cemetery attached. Dozinghem also has a Trappist monastery nearby which sells excellent beer !
Ernest would have been wounded during the Battle of Polygon Wood, 26th Sept to 3rd October 1917. 2/8th Bn SF were part of 178th Inf Brigade along with the 2/5th, 2/6th and 2/7th Bn SF. The Brigade was part of 59th Division , V Corps, 5th Army.
The Division was in the battle from 26th to 29th. The Battalion actually went into the front line on 24th Sept and Ernest was probably wounded on 25th before the battle started.
I have attached a photo of his grave.
There are other photos on my Ypres site under Casualty Clearing Stations. Get there via cwgc in index.
If I can help with anything else , let me know.
A Belgian friend is studying the cemetery as his family farm surrounds it. If there are any relatives still about, I am sure he would like to talk to them.
