Five Victorian Remembrance cards, about people from the Wirksworth Area. Such cards were usually given at funerals, were stoutly made, and contained the deceased's full names, date of birth, location of birth, date they passed away and on some, the location of death. So they are very useful for Family History research if they survive. They had heavy black edges, and were popular around 1840-1900

"Phoebe Gregory, who died January 26th 1891, aged 74 years,
And was interred at St Mark's Church, Cromford, January 29th."

    5. Phoebe GREGORY died 1891 aged 74, interred at Cromford

Phoebe Barker was born in Matlock (Lime Tree Lane) in 1817 to Elizabeth Barker, who is recorded as though she is unmarried. In 1841 Elizabeth is living in Scarthin Nick with her mother Silence (c 1758-1846), and unmarried children Harriott and Mary

About 1840 Phoebe married John Gregory (born 1814). The marriage has not yet been found. Phoebe and John have 7 children, probably all born at Scarthin Nick (between Matlock and Cromford). John's occupation is given as wood or pit sawyer. Such strong men wielded a large double-handed saw, one standing on top of a felled tree (the "top dog") and one in a pit underneath (the "under dog").

The children work as cotton spinners, probably at nearby Arkwright's Mill, from as early as 10 years.

Phoebe dies in 1891, leaving John a widower still alive in 1901 at 76 Main Street, Cromford, aged 89
