Wirksworth Infants 1910

Steve Walley sent this interesting photo. It is from his mother-in-law's (Gillian Wall) collection. The photo is glued firmly to cardboard so if there is anything on the back it is not accessible.
Please contact me
if you know any of the people. A good starting place to explore a bit of the Wirksworth people web.

John
I went to Wirksworth on Saturday [20oct2013] and was surprised to find that the wall on the right of the picture is the south facing rear wall of the still existing school. The building bears a stone with the date 1896. I enclose a photograph including taken roughly where the 1910 photograph appears to be taken.
Regards
Steve Walley

The children are sat on the word "infant" (see map below), facing the railway - webmaster.

Wirksworth Infants c 1910

Gillian Wall writes 12oct2013
"2nd row - 1st girl from the right as you look at the picture - Emma Wood - aged 6 - married Robert William Walker - 1 son Herbert. She died 1927 aged 23 - little Herbert was drowned 1928 aged two and a half."
"I am almost sure that one of the teachers is Miss Fox - she was still teaching when I started school in 1945 and my brother also in 1950 so I assume she is the younger looking teacher. she was at the same school all the time and taught my Dad also."
"The building is Wirksworth Station yard infant school - the front playground. The access to it is off North End next to the hairdressers but I have not been there for years and not sure if the building is still there or replaced by housing. I must have a look - it will bring back memories. There is a jitty from the school yard down to the Ecclesbourne railway - hence I suppose it was always known as the Station Yard school. There was another infant school in Chapel Lane but the posher element seemed to go there. There were a lot of kids from the Dale and Greenhill at the Station Yard School - they could walk down across the fields before the New Road was blasted through and the bridge built."

This map is 1920, Emma Wood lived at 66 Dale, its about 500 yards to school, as the crow flies, downhill in the morning.
